My First Time
Posted on August 2, 2014
My husband has wanted me to write a blog for some time. I have wanted to write a blog for even longer. I was having trouble figuring out what to write about. I thought about all the things that I thoroughly enjoy. One thing kept coming up: MUSIC. I like playing guitar, singing, leading children in singing and listening to music. Music is really quite powerful. It is something that changes one’s mood. It certainly changes my mood. I generally use it for a calming effect. It can also be for getting pumped up for a game or concert, etc. I find it hard to stay in a bad mood when singing joyful songs with children. I tend to sit back, listen, and smile.
I was thinking that I would focus on the music that I listen to on the radio. I decided I would choose my favorite song from every year that I have been on this earth. I was born in 1970, so that is where I will begin.
(Just a side note, I am sure my blog will end up being about many different things that I am interested in.)
I certainly do not remember anything from the year 1970. By year end I would have been 6 months and three weeks old. I do love math, so I could bore you with exactly how many days, hours, minutes, or seconds that was. But I will spare you. Well….here is a calculator if you would like to figure out such a thing. It is courtesy of my husband, Rodney Dolen.  www.rdconcepts.biz/DateDifference.aspx
So, my lack of memory for 1970 has nothing to do with knowing music from that year. Now a days you can listen to music of the 70’s on satellite radio, if you are fortunate enough to have that. I don’t have it in my own vehicle. I listen to “WYMG Radio, Classic Rock at 100.5”. This comes out of Springfield, IL.
To find out what songs were from 1970, I looked up American Billboard Hot 100 [billboard.com] for the year. I saw many groups that I liked e.g. The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Bread, James Taylor, etc. There were many songs that I liked e.g. “Our House”, “No Sugar Tonight”, “Proud Mary”, “In the Summertime”, etc. The one I chose as my favorite is “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night. It comes from the album. Naturally.

I had this as my ringtone a few years back. This song was on the soundtrack of The Big Chill. The movie came out in 1983. The movie starred: Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt, Kevin Kline, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly, and JoBeth Williams. Most of whom I was familiar with at the time. I believe I had seen the movie, but it did not leave any lasting impressions. It is about a group of thirty some things that have gathered for a reunion. Being thirteen at the time, thirty was ancient.
What did impress me was the soundtrack. I fondly recall listening to the cassette in my neighbor’s 1982, red TC3 the entire summer of 1985. It featured other goodies like “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”, “A Whiter Shade of Pale”, “Tracks of My Tears”, and many more. But, my favorite was “Joy to the World.” And, oh how that cassette got worn.

My first attraction to the song was probably the fact that I was so familiar with the Christian song of the same title. But, this version is COMPLETELY different.
From the website Songfacts.com, I found out many things about this song. It was originally written for an animated TV special that never materialized. Many people speculate to the meaning of the lyrics. They range from the biblical aspect of the prophet Jeremiah to a drug-induced hallucination. The writer, Hoyt Axton was known more as a hell raiser than a church goer.
Now, I must learn to play this song on guitar!
